The Eleanor Wade Custer School of Nursing hosted the 7th Annual Cultural Care Conference and Celebration on Friday, Nov. 1, at the Brandt Student Center on main campus. This year’’s event focused on “Interfaith Dialogue and Nursing Care of the Muslim Patient.” The event creator and coordinator, Assistant Professor of Nursing Sohayla Raja, DNP, MSN, MLA, PMHNP-BC, spoke about how culture and value systems play a role in how nurses interact with people. Campus Minister & Worship Arts Coordinator the Rev. Delyn Celec, and Chaplain & Muslim Community Coordinator Hanaa Unus, addressed the topic of interfaith dialogue. This was followed by a wonderful exercise in reflective structured dialogue (RSD) led by Associate Professor of Spanish and RSD Director Adela Borrallo-Solis, Ph.D. RSD promotes mutual respect and encourages reflection rather than reactivity to allow for more productive discussions where everyone has a chance to be heard. Next on the agenda was a presentation on caring for the Muslim patient, which was given by Chaplain & Muslim Community Coordinator Hanaa Unus and two PA students, Julia Havron ‘20 and Sarah Foroughi ‘21. The group then enjoyed a fabulous International Potluck luncheon with student, staff and faculty multi-cultural presentations and performances. The final event of the day was a fun collective musicking experience, led by Assistant Professor of Music Therapy Bronwen Landless, Ph.D. candidate, MMT, MT-BC, where students grabbed musical instruments and joined together in a harmonious jam session.
