Aubrey Deeker Hernandez Appointed Associate Professor of Acting
Shenandoah Conservatory announces the appointment of Aubrey Deeker Hernandez, M.F.A., as associate professor of acting beginning August 2023.
“I am so impressed with the students, faculty and staff at Shenandoah Conservatory and impossibly excited to join their team in this beautiful and historic part of the country,” said Deeker Hernandez. “I am grateful for the chance to be a part of such a vibrant community of artists and educators, and I can’t wait for the fall!”
As an actor, Deeker Hernandez has appeared internationally in “Love’s Labor’s Lost” at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, Off-Broadway in the world premiere of “The Liar” by David Ives at Classic Stage Company, and in 13 productions as an affiliated artist at the Tony Award-winning Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., including “King Lear” directed by Bob Falls, Mercutio in “Romeo and Juliet” and Octavius Caesar in “Antony and Cleopatra.” Other credits include the title role in “Hamlet” and Tom in “The Glass Menagerie” (Denver Center Theatre Company), Prior Walter in “Angels in America” (Wilma Theater, Barrymore Nomination), “An Enemy of the People” (Goodman Theatre), “Boom” (Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Helen Hayes nomination), “The Walworth Farce” (Studio Theatre, Helen Hayes nomination), “A Fox on the Fairway” (Signature Theatre, Ken Ludwig world premiere), “The Grapes of Wrath” (Ford’s Theatre, directed by David Cromer), and productions at The Old Globe, South Coast Rep, Kennedy Center, Round House Theatre, Folger Theatre, Theatre J and Everyman Theatre, among others.
“Aubrey has an impressive acting career in film, TV and stage,” said Director of Acting and Associate Professor of Theatre Scott Hudson, M.F.A. “He is also an experienced higher education teacher, specializing in acting for the camera and industry preparedness. His style is sharp and welcoming, communicating with clarity and directness. He stays updated with the industry and maintains strong connections. He looks forward to reconnecting with the D.C. theatre scene, where he performed at renowned venues like the Folger and Ford’s Theatre, and where he taught theatre to inner-city high school students.”
Television credits include Ridley Scott’s “The Man in the High Castle,” “True Blood,” “The Wire,” “The Mentalist,” “Castle,” “Backstrom,” “NCIS,” “NCIS: New Orleans” and “Crisis,” as well as the films “So the Lord Must Wait,” “A Matter of Time,” “Distance,” “Leave No Marine Behind” and “The Seer.”
He is a proud member of the National Alliance of Acting Teachers. He has taught in the Master of Fine Arts acting program at UMKC Conservatory in Kansas City, the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Dean College, Stella Adler LA and AMDA College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts. Deeker Hernandez is a former Kenan Foundation Artist-in-Residence at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., a Boomerang Fund grant recipient for excellence in the arts and the recipient of a Theatre Lobby Award for an emerging artist.
“His innovative ideas for early career actors resonate with our content-savvy upper-level students,” continued Hudson. “Aubrey is thoughtful, courteous and thorough, making him an excellent collaborator. With a B.F.A. in theatre from the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA), he brings his deep connection to the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains. We are thrilled to have Aubrey join our acting faculty and the conservatory.”
He received his undergraduate degree from the School of Drama at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and his Master of Fine Arts from The Old Globe and the University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program.
