McCormick Civil War Institute Conference Hosts Annual Spring Conference, April 7

“Another Era in Our War Life: When the Home Front Became the Battle Front”

Shenandoah University McCormick Civil War Institute will host its annual spring conference, “Another Era in Our War Life: When the Home Front Became the Battle Front” on Saturday, April 7, in Hester Auditorium, Henkel Hall, on main campus from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This is going to be one of the largest events in the 26-year history of the McCormick Civil War Institute,” said Director Jonathan Noyalas, M.A., who has lined up an impressive cadre of historians to present at the conference. The schedule includes:

8:30-9:15 a.m. | Check-in at Hester Auditorium, Mary M. Henkel Hall

9:15-9:30 a.m. | Welcome & Opening Remarks

9:30-10:30 a.m. | Jonathan A. Noyalas, “Prisoners in Our Own Houses”: Civilians and Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign

10:30-10:45 a.m. | Break

10:45-11:45 a.m. | Frank A. O’Reilly, “The Sacking of Fredericksburg”

11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. | Lunch in Allen Dining Hall

12:45-1:45 p.m. | Allen Guelzo, “How the Town Shaped the Battle: Gettysburg, 1863”

1:45-2:00 p.m | Break

2:00-3:00 p.m. | Anne Sarah Rubin, “Northern Scout, Southern Civilians: George W. Quimby’s Adventures during Sherman’s March”

3:00-3:15 p.m. | Transport/Caravan to Sheridan’s Field Hospital Site

3:15-4:00 p.m. | Eric Campbell, Interpretive Program at Sheridan’s Field Hospital Site

The McCormick Civil War Institute was made possible by a gift from Hugh and Virginia McCormick. Mr. McCormick, a direct descendant of a Civil War veteran, held a lifelong interest in promoting, preservation and education in this field.
