Shenandoah University To Host Public Safety Open House, June 22

Free One-Day Event Showcases Training For Emergency Responders and Community Members

Shenandoah University’s Shenandoah Center for Immersive Learning (SCIL) and its Emergency Preparedness Instructional Center (EPIC) will host a Public Safety Open House on Friday, June 22, in Halpin-Harrison Hall, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This one-day event will showcase the training provided to first responders, school and hospital administrators and lay individuals in training scenarios. Below is the schedule for the day.

8 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. | Welcome and overview of SCIL and EPIC
9 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. | Creating a Rescue Task Force– Helping Fire/EMS Agencies Develop an Active Shooter Resource
10 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. | Running an Active Shooter Exercise
11 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. | Using Role Players To Encourage Low-Risk, Immediate-Impact Behavior
1 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. | Personal Disaster Preparedness for Health Care Professionals
2 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. | Preparing Future Nurses for Disasters
3 p.m. – 5 p.m. | Stop the Bleed — Training the Layperson How to Recognize and Treat Serious Bleeding

In addition, attendees can experience the latest technologies used in training such as:

9 a.m .– 11 a.m. | Inside the Human Body Virtual Reality (VR) Experience – Learn Anatomy From the Inside
9 a.m. – 11 a.m. | Crisis Intervention Scenario Interactions
1 p.m. – 3 p.m. | Active Shooter Virtual Reality (VR) Experience and Talk Back

The event is free and open to the public, and vendors will be on hand displaying the latest tools and equipment. The focus of the day will be training public safety professionals (fire, EMS, law enforcement, emergency management, school security and hospital administration), and community members are invited to learn what EPIC is doing to improve public safety training and what they can do to “stop the bleed” during those critical first few minutes after an incident occurs.
