Zerull Presents Research at Midwest Clinic

Chair of Conservatory Academics Division and Professor of Music Education David Zerull, Ph.D., presented at the Midwest Clinic in December. The presentation, “Teaching the Art of Music for Meaningful Student Assessment,” invited attendees to consider shifting curriculum and assessment strategies away from a skill-based focus to one that focuses on the the art of music through study of the elements of music. Teaching the arts enables assessment of student learning that can deepen student understanding of the art of music and provide documentation of student growth and achievement for purposes of teacher accountability. It was Zerull’s fourth appearance at the Midwest Clinic. Previous sessions included rehearsal techniques, strategies for a comprehensive approach to teaching from the podium, and teaching expression through focus on movement in music.
