Shenandoah Shines at VPhA Conference

Pharmacy students win competition and faculty member presents at annual gathering

The Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy made its presence well known at this year’s Virginia Pharmacists Association conference in August in Virginia Beach.

Inova Center for Personalized Health P3 Pharmacy students Christian Sowalla, Geoffry Genna, Jessica Dotson and Jennifer Bingham won the Virginia Pharmacists Association (VPhA) Student Pharmacist Self Care Competition. All four schools of pharmacy in Virginia (Shenandoah, Virginia Commonwealth University, Appalachian College of Pharmacy and Hampton University) competed.

Dotson was also inducted as the student director on the VPhA Board of Directors. Dotson is serving as a liaison between the four schools of pharmacy and VPhA Board of Directors.  VPhA rotates the student director role between the four school of pharmacy each year.

Professor and Director of Postgraduate Education and Interim Assistant Dean of Assessment Mark Johnson, Pharm.D., presented the new drug update at the meeting. Dr. Johnson has presented the new drug update for a few years at VPhA. The presentation highlighted the new drugs approved in 2019 by the FDA that will be prescribed in general clinical practice. Aspects that were reviewed for each new drug included: indications, efficacy, pharmacokinetics, safety, dosing, cost, and comparison vs. existing drugs. The presentation also included clinically applicable cases.
