Fulbright Fellow studies at Islamic center at Shenandoah University

Faridh Omar will research leadership in American Islamic institutions

Mohd Faridh Hafez Mhd Omar, a fellow in the Faculty of Leadership and Management at the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, is serving as a Fulbright fellow at the Center for Islam in the Contemporary World at Shenandoah University.

His fellowship runs from Sept. 9, 2019, to Dec. 28, 2019.

Faridh Omar, a Ph.D. student at the Academy of Islamic Studies University Malaya, is studying governance and leadership framework in U.S. Islamic institutions and nongovernmental organizations, or NGOs. He was selected for the Fulbright U.S. – ASEAN Initiative Program, which is open to university faculty, foreign ministry and government officials, along with professional staff of private sector organizations, think tanks and NGOs in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states.

Fellows travel to the United States for scholarly and professional research for four months on issues that are relevant and central to the U.S.– ASEAN relationship.

Faridh Omar will study the styles of leadership and governance practices at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS Center), in Sterling, Virginia; the Islamic Center at New York University; the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) in Herndon, Virginia; and the American Islamic Congress (AIC) in Washington, D.C.

His research is aimed to serve as a guideline and framework for Islamic institutions and NGOs in ASEAN countries.

By hosting Faridh Omar and directing his research — supported by the prestigious Fulbright fellowship — we hope to raise the research profile of the Center for Islam in the Contemporary World, or CICW, and Shenandoah University. We are also contributing to a better understanding of leadership and governance in American Muslim institutions.”

Ermin Sinanovic | CICW Executive Director

Faridh Omar chose the CICW at Shenandoah University because of Sinanovic’s reputation as a well-known scholar in Islam and Islamic thought and politics. The CICW is also a new center that focuses on Islam and contemporary world issues.

It offers a great opportunity to any scholar or academician to grow their expertise through research, teaching and training, and I am looking forward to collaborating and learning.”

Faridh Omar will share his work and research with Shenandoah classes, students and professors. He will also collaborate with faculty; network with scholars, professors and Islamic NGO leaders; and engage the community through programs and services.
