Safety Tips for Students

Despite having a trained professional Department of Campus Safety at Shenandoah University, or even local and state law enforcement agencies, the person who can do the most to keep you safe is you. In addition to using the Safe Walk Program on campus (540-678-4444), you can:

 

• Always be aware of your surroundings.
• Report suspicious people or activity to the Department of Campus Safety.
• Never allow anyone you don’t know into your residence hall.
• Never prop open exterior doors on residence hall buildings.
• Never listen to loud music while jogging or walking that will prevent you from hearing car and foot traffic.
• Make sure your residence hall room door is locked at all times – even if you’re just running down the hall to hop in the shower.
• Be careful with your keys; if they’re lost, pay the fine and get a new key.
• Keep your car locked and windows up.
• Periodically check on your car if you don’t drive it often.
• Get a locking device for your laptop.
• Keep an eye on your property while in the library or dining hall.
• Put emergency numbers in your cell phone, including DCS (540)678-4444.
• Travel with a friend at night – safe neighborhood or not.
• Do not take valuables to off-campus parties and, if you don’t recognize most of the people there, leave with a friend.
• Always tell someone where you’re going.
• Always tell someone when you get home.
