Media & Communication Partners to Co-present Young Screenwriters Conference

Event Features Workshop with Top Graphic Novelist/Screenwriter

The Department of Media and Communication teamed up with Project Write, the Shenandoah Valley Writing Project, Four Color Fantasies, and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to bring the Young Screenwriters Conference to the area in October. Comic creator and screenwriter Joe Kelly, most widely known as the author of the graphic novel “I Kill Giants” and the screenwriter for the film of the same name, served as keynote speaker for the day of screenwriting and production workshops.

More than 60 students and their advisers spent the morning with Joe Kelly, ate in the dining hall, and participated in workshops led by Shenandoah instructors Assistant Professor of Media & Communication Kelley Crowley, Ph.D.; Director-In-Residence Blayne Weaver, and Director of the Film Studio at Shenandoah Paul DiFranco.

Participants could purchase reduced fare tickets for a screening of “I Kill Giants” at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at the conclusion of the conference.

The Young Screenwriters’ Conference was supported by grants from the Marion Park Lewis Foundation, Virginia Film of the Virginia Tourism Board, and the Shenandoah Valley Writing Project.
