Romano ’91 Presents Flute Pedagogy Workshop for VMEA Virtual Conference

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Theory Charlene Romano ’91, M.M., along with Laura Filppu, director of bands at Daniel Morgan Middle School in Winchester, Virginia, presented a very well-attended Flute Pedagogy Reboot for Band Directors at the Virginia Music Education Association’s virtual annual conference in November. Romano presented her student ownership-based approach for beginners, a method which synthesizes core concepts of posture, breathing, embouchure flexibility and critical listening, and fosters the development of musical expression from the first time the student holds the instrument. She also presented updates on flute technology and manufacturing which affect pedagogical practices, and discussed other current best practices that allow students to be self-sufficient and successful. The workshop received a five-star rating from attendees.

Romano is the owner and operator of a highly successful home studio and is a sought-after clinician and adjudicator. Her private students continue to win scholarships and competitions on local, state and regional levels.
