The Center For Story’s Speaker Series
April 15 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
The Center for Story at Shenandoah’s Speaker Series continues with “What’s The Story: Media Matters” on Monday, April 15, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Henkel Hall, Hester Auditorium. Sean Murphy, M.A., director of the Center for Story, will be joined by Adjunct Assistant Professor Steven L. Herman, M.A., to discuss the ways story operates within the media and political landscape.
In an era of “fake news” and deteriorating trust in traditional media, how do we objectively assess how to understand our world, especially during an election year? How does narrative work within the newsroom as well as social media – and how do we go behind the printed words to interrogate how money, influence, and partisan leanings influence the way “the news” is presented? How can students equip themselves to navigate a landscape where bad actors and AI proliferate? Herman, chief national correspondent for the Voice of America, with his decades of experience, is the ideal tour guide for what has changed, and what’s to come, in the media. This discussion will provide some insight, and stimulate conversation. An audience Q&A session is encouraged throughout this informal, action-packed discussion.
