Financial Aid can be broken down into three categories: Grants & Scholarships, Loans and Work Study.
This guide is here to help students understand their award letter and how their financial aid package helps pay for college.
Information from your award letter is needed on this guide. If you have lost your award letter or need a new one sent to you please contact the Office of Financial Aid at 540-665-4538 or finaid@su.edu.
Grants and scholarships are aid that does not need to be paid back. Most grants and scholarships are awarded to students based on academic merit, talent and financial need as determined by the FAFSA. Some grants and scholarships are awarded based on the program of study such as the Conservatory Scholarship and Nursing Grant. State grants are awarded based on domicile and typically require a state application.
*Students are strongly encouraged to pursue scholarships from outside the university. Your home community and the Internet can be great potential sources for a scholarship. Some outside scholarship resources we have found helpful may be found here.
*VTAG applications must be received by The Office of Financial Aid by July 31st to receive this award. Application may be found here.
Subsidized, Unsubsidized and Parent PLUS loans all have origination fees*, this will be deducted from the loan prior to posting to the student account.
The Work Study program allows students to work and earn money at a campus job while enrolled. Students typically work between 8 to 10 hours a week and work hours are scheduled around the student’s classes. Work Study is paid directly to the student in the form of a check. Students earn money for the hours they work and are paid biweekly on Fridays.
The amount on the award letter is the maximum amount the student may earn during the award year. These funds are paid to the student and do not go towards the University bill.
