Nursing School Inducts New Members Into Honor Society; Students Participate In Disaster Drill

Shenandoah’s Eleanor Wade Custer School of Nursing held the induction ceremony for the Rho Pi Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society in November, in Halpin-Harrison Hall, Stimpson Auditorium.

Martha J. Morrow, Ph.D., FNP-BC, served as the speaker for the event. Dr. Morrow obtained her RN from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Elmira, New York. She graduated from State University of New York, Binghamton with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). She obtained her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and doctorate from George Mason University, and her Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from the University of Virginia. She was on Shenandoah’s faculty for 35 years and retired in 2015. She co-designed the university’s FNP program with Dr. Jan Wyatt, and was the director of the program for many years.

Morrow assisted in obtaining grants for initial FNP positions for free clinics in Winchester and Front Royal and worked at both clinics, as well as volunteered in the women’s health clinics. She participated in numerous Shenandoah alternative spring break mission programs for construction projects in Mexico. She sought to develop a medical mission trip for health professions students, and she led the medical mission trips to Mexico and South America until her retirement. Morrow is now enjoying spending time with her grandchildren, gardening and seeing the country via her camper. She also enjoys assisting her son, who digs and prepares dinosaur remains in Montana.

Inova disaster drill. In other recent nursing news, senior nursing students from Scholar Plaza Loudoun participated in a full-scale disaster drill at Inova Fairfax Hospital on Oct. 25. The students played the role of victims requiring decontamination. At the end of the drill, the students provided feedback about the drill, processes that went well and areas needing improvement.

Inova disaster drillThe drill, involving 43 hospitals throughout central and Northern Virginia, enabled participating hospitals to assess their capabilities and test their policies and procedures. The hospitals collaborated with each other to coordinate transportation and distribution of victims, release of information, and ways to contact victims’ families.
