School of Nursing News: Spring/Early Summer 2020

Recent graduates post outstanding exam performances and faculty members earn advanced degrees

Shenandoah’s 2019 graduates from both the Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner programs have a 100% licensing exam pass rate. The national average for first-time pass rates is typically between 85% and 89%.

Professor of Nursing Sharron Guillett, RN, Ph.D., wrote a chapter in the book, “Wellness and Disability in Disability as Diversity: A Guidebook for Inclusion in Medicine, Nursing and the Health Professions.” A companion case study book will be published soon.

Nursing student Lindsay Hoffman ’23, and School of Nursing administrative assistant Donna Hoffman recently volunteered at Loudoun Makersmiths in Leesburg, Virginia, assembling and packaging face shields, which were then donated to the medical providers and staff at the Sinclair Health Clinic in Winchester. Makersmiths Inc., a community-based nonprofit, has generously made and donated over 1,100 face shields to health care workers and first responders as part of its COVID-19 response effort. 

Assistant Professor of Nursing and Director of Nursing at Scholar Plaza, Loudoun, Kathleen Eid-Heberle, RN, Ph.D., has successfully defended her doctoral dissertation, “Exploration of Factors that Promote Continued Volunteer Engagement of American Red Cross Disaster Health Services Nurses.” She attended the Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing program at The Catholic University of America. 

Nursing Lecturer Sharon Simon, DNP, RN, successfully defended her DNP project, “Nurse Practitioner Preceptor Training Using the One-Minute Preceptor Model.” She attended the Doctor of Nursing Practice program through The Ohio State University. Dr. Simon is a full-time lecturer in Shenandoah’s graduate (nurse practitioner) programs.

Lecturer April VanBuecken, DNP, RN, successfully defended her DNP project, “Nursing Student Satisfaction and Transformational Teaching through the American Sentinel University Doctorate of Nursing Practice program.” Dr. VanBuecken is a lecturer in Shenandoah’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs and teaches Health Assessment, Leadership & Management, and Ethics and Genomics.
