Artifact of the Quarter | September 2020

Among the artifacts recently donated to MCWI was a tintype of Private Harrison E. White. Born in Oneida County, New York, in either 1840 or 1841, White enlisted in Co. M, 2^nd New York Heavy Artillery, on Nov. 1, 1861. He served in the regiment until his enlistment expired three years later. Although he came through his first three years physically unscathed, he was captured at the 2^nd Battle of Bull Run. When Private White’s service ended with the 2^nd New York Heavy Artillery, he enlisted in Co. C, 1^st United States Veteran Volunteer Infantry. Service in that regiment carried him to the Midwest at the Civil War’s end. In 1870, White and his new bride, Agnes Furgeson, moved to Shenandoah County, Virginia. White remained a farmer until his death on Feb. 20, 1913. White is buried in Lebanon Church Cemetery, in Lebanon Church, Virginia.
