‘Strong Scholars’ Named

Two education students receive Hattie M. Strong Foundation scholarships

Congratulations to Alexia Frey ’22 and Sarah Gallant ’22 for being named Hattie M. Strong Foundation Scholarship recipients. This semester, Frey will be student teaching in elementary schools and Gallant will be student teaching in high school history classes. 

Caleb Allen Strong Scholarship recipient Fall 2021The pair join Caleb Allen ’21 (mathematics major/secondary education minor), who received the Fall 2021 award and has student-taught high school Algebra I and Probability & Statistics courses, and fellow Spring 2022 awardees Karina Starling ’22 (Bachelor of Music in Music Education) and Heather Jones ’22. The Hattie M. Strong Foundation provides these scholarships so that students can focus on their internships and prepare for their new careers.

According to the Hattie M. Strong Foundation’s website

“Funds for the $5,000 scholarships are distributed via partnership with twenty-four institutions, all located near Washington, D.C., that have demonstrated leadership in preparing outstanding classroom teachers. Application requirement and student selection will be determined by each institution’s scholarship committee in line with the following criteria in descending order of importance:

  • Undergraduate students who have exhibited outstanding success and enthusiasm in field experience prior to the final year of the program or graduate students whose life experiences prior to enrollment reveal the same traits
  • Students with demonstrated financial need
  • Students who have achieved a minimum 3.0 GPA in the two semesters prior to their final year”
