Commercial Rock Ensemble and Studio Big Band Perform Across Spain and Portugal on GEL Trip

The Shenandoah Conservatory Commercial Rock Ensemble and Studio Big Band traveled to Spain and Portugal earlier this month as part of a Global Experiential Learning (GEL) trip, performing five concerts for international audiences. The ensembles represented the United States as featured participants in the American Jazz Showcase, an annual celebration presented by Edeta Arts that highlights outstanding university jazz programs from across the country.

Performing in cities including Madrid, Granada, Sevilla, Lisbon and Leiria, the students shared the sound of American jazz and commercial music on stages throughout the region. Concerts were organized in partnership with local cultural departments and music associations, creating opportunities for meaningful cultural exchange alongside the performances.

Beyond the stage, students immersed themselves in the cultural and historical landscapes of Spain and Portugal. Highlights included attending a flamenco performance at Tablao Flamenco La Alborea in Granada, hiking the breathtaking cliffside walkway of Caminito del Rey and traveling by high-speed train to Córdoba. The group also visited the iconic Mezquita-Cathedral in Córdoba, explored the historic Alhambra palace complex in Granada and toured the medieval hilltop town of Óbidos, known for its well-preserved 14th-century walls and royal heritage.

The trip was coordinated by Director of Jazz & Commercial Music and Associate Professor of Trombone Matthew Niess, D.M.A., and provided students with a unique opportunity to perform internationally while engaging deeply with the artistic and cultural traditions of the region.
