Frequently Used Emergency Terms

Evacuation designated by a fire alarm or emergency personnel means that all occupants leave the building to the designated evacuation location. Occupants DO NOT return to the building until directed to do so by emergency personnel or a building coordinator.

Avoid an area means to stay away from a particular building or area as there may be suspicious activity or a potential threat. There may also be police activity in the area that should not be interrupted.

Shelter in place is an emergency precaution to remain inside a building and find a safe location, usually in an interior room away from windows, until an “all clear” is given or further instructions are issued. A shelter-in-place order can be issued for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to a tornado, hazardous materials, or a potential or active threat.

Secure in place is an elevated shelter-in-place order. If it is safe to do so, lock and barricade doors; close windows and shades; stay out of sight and seek cover behind or under solid objects; and silence cell phones and voices. You should remain in this location until instructed otherwise by emergency personnel.

Active threat is a dynamic, quickly evolving situation involving an individual(s) using or threatening deadly physical force, such as firearms, bladed weapons, etc. It typically involves an individual presenting an immediate threat or immediate danger to people by displaying a weapon, having made threats, and/or shown intent to cause harm or perform violence.

Active shooter is an active and immediate threat indicating a person(s) actively using a firearm to target victims. This is where Run, Hide, Fight should be used during an active shooter situation.
