Lewis and Clark VR
Following in their Footsteps
The Lewis and Clark expedition of 1803-1806 is one of the most important diplomatic and scientific expeditions in history. This educational VR experience teaches about the Corps of Discovery and the expedition’s people, places, and events. The project contains deep-dive videos narrated by experts, interactive virtual artifacts, recreations of important historical structures and places, 360 photos of real-life locations, immersive sound, and informative text.
Lewis and Clark VR explores the history of the Corps of Discovery from a variety of viewpoints and is designed to be used as a supplement to classroom learning across multiple grade levels, including middle school, high school, and early college.
This project is generously supported by the Lewis & Clark Trail Alliance.

Making Lewis and Clark VR
Lewis and Clark VR was designed and developed by a team of Shenandoah University faculty, staff, and students at the Shenandoah Center for Immersive Learning (SCiL) based on a summer travel experience that retraced the route of the Corps of Discovery. Over two weeks, our students met with expert historians, explored important locations, captured 360 imagery and drone footage, and made 3D scans of historical artifacts.
Following the trip, a second team of students, faculty, and staff developed the Lewis and Clark VR experience over the course of the academic year. Their work included 3D modeling, computer programming, level design, video editing, sound design, music composition, writing, and more.
