Global Travel Broadens Your Horizons
SU’s Global Citizenship Project provides global experiences that encourage students, faculty and staff to gain a greater awareness of themselves and an appreciation for the cultural differences that make our world a better place.
Each spring break, Shenandoah sends 60 selected students, faculty, and staff to international destinations to help broaden their horizons. Applicants sign on without knowing where they will travel—They could be spending spring break anywhere in the world!
GCP removes the boundaries associated with first-time travel, in order to whet the appetites of participants for longer-term learning abroad.
The Global Citizenships Project is all costs included for participants!

My GCP group and I visited a university class in Spain that was learning the English language. It was so easy to connect with these students no matter our backgrounds, ages, and beliefs. I felt like I was able to open myself up to these students and express myself in so many different ways through my conversations with them. To be able to do that in another country is a privilege to me and I can’t express how much I loved my experience in Spain!”

My GCP experience in Puerto Rico was absolutely amazing!! Not only did I get to experience a whole new culture, but I also made new friends and got out of my comfort zone. My favorite thing about Puerto Rico was trying new food and learning more about the history. I also was amazed by Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. They have an amazing nursing school and a lot of high-tech simulation tools. Overall, it was a fantastic experience!”

My experience was absolutely incredible. I made really incredible friends, ones I’m even closer to than people I’ve known since elementary school. I’m so thankful I came alone from SU. It really forced me to branch out and stretch my comfort zone a bit. I’m actually going to Paris with a group of 13 Americans for my birthday!”

I traveled to Bhutan on the GCP trip! It was really eye-opening to see such an economically underdeveloped country be so prosperous in its inter-citizen community, and be more advanced than Western culture in teaching that you don’t have to be monetarily wealthy to live a happy life.”

To anyone who is ever given the opportunity to study abroad: I highly encourage you to take the journey. Not only have I seen things that take my breath away, but I have also made some pretty great friends along the way.”

Education Abroad Takes Your Learning to the Next Level
You don’t need to be an expert in another language to participate in study abroad. Many courses are available in English. With advanced planning with your Academic and Education Abroad Advisors, the classes you take abroad will count as course credits toward your major or general education requirements.
Study abroad experiences are affordable! Financial aid applies to your study abroad experience, so studying abroad is often the same cost as tuition at Shenandoah University. Usually, student’s only extra expense is airfare to reach your destination.
Make studying abroad the highlight of your college experience! Whether you go for a year, a semester, or just a few weeks, you will never forget learning in another culture!
The Barzinji Institute
The Jamal Barzinji Institute for Global Virtual Learning honors Dr. Barzinji’s legacy as an educator, community builder, and humanitarian. This collaboration provides opportunities for individuals and institutions to explore, analyze, and engage in critical thinking, and cross-cultural communication to identify and pursue shared goals.
Dr. Jamal Barzinji was an intellectual educator and community builder who advocated for “collective action on pressing contemporary issues. Education, health care, civil rights, racial justice, gender equality — he did not view these as political or intellectual debates, but as pivotal opportunities to create and ensure societal harmony.” (Islamic Horizons, 2015) In order to honor Dr. Barzinji’s legacy as an educator, community builder and humanitarian, Shenandoah University launched the Jamal Barzinji Project for International Collaboration to Advance Higher Education.
