Shenandoah is pleased to announce that Rachel A. Carlson, EdD, MSBS, PA-C has been named the new director of the Division of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies for the School of Health Professions.
Shenandoah University is pleased to announce that Rachel A. Carlson, EdD, MSBS, PA-C has been named the new director of the Division of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies for the School of Health Professions. Carlson succeeds Anthony A. Miller, Med, PA-C, who will join the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) on Oct. 1 as a senior director. Carlson is currently an associate director and associate professor for the university’s PA program and has been a member of the department since 2002.
“I am honored that the university has chosen me to fill this role for the PA program,” said Carlson. “This is a wonderful opportunity not only for me, but for Tony as he moves on to work with the PAEA. I look forward to serving Shenandoah in this new capacity and am excited for the new responsibilities and challenges it brings.”
Carlson is also a physician assistant with Premier Health Resources in Winchester, Va. and has previously filled that role at Valley Health’s Urgent Care Center in Winchester, Va. and Life Stages Family Care Specialists in Bellevue, Ohio. She is a member of and has held positions with the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants. Carlson also serves as chair of the PA Advisory Board to the Virginia Board of Medicine. She earned her master’s degree in physician assistant studies from the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo, Ohio and her doctoral degree in higher education leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Miller has served Shenandoah University since his arrival in October of 2000. The first physician assistant class began in August 2001 and graduated in December 2003 – the program will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in 2013.
“I am honored to have devoted the past 12 years to Shenandoah University and am excited to begin my new position with the PAEA,” said Miller. “I am happy to continue my association with Shenandoah as Distinguished Professor of Physician Assistant Studies.”
