Mitch Moore has been promoted to an expanded role of senior vice president at Shenandoah University, effective Friday, July 1. In addition, he will continue to serve as vice president for advancement, a position he has held since his arrival at the university in 2008.
In his new role, Moore will handle a wide range of matters of institutional importance on behalf of the president related to the overall management, operations, planning, positioning and fundraising of the university and provide coordination and oversight of core initiatives frequently crossing boundaries between different university divisions.
In the president’s absence, Moore will act on behalf of the institution on all non-academic issues. He will also serve as the principal staff liaison to the Board of Trustees.
“I have enjoyed my first eight years here at Shenandoah, and I look forward to many additional years in my expanded role,” said Moore.
The appointment follows a period in which Shenandoah University launched a new strategic plan, “Shenandoah 2025,” a roadmap for achieving a world-class, high-energy, creative learning environment for the university’s students and faculty.
Moore shepherded the strategic planning process, which provides a clear path for a solid future, strengthening the university with a bold vision for becoming nationally recognized for forward-thinking programs that produce competitive and purposeful graduates.
“Mitch is an enthusiastic proponent of community partnerships and cross-university collaboration,” said President Tracy Fitzsimmons, Ph.D. “His tireless work to garner financial support and external publicity for Shenandoah’s academic programs has positioned us for future success in addressing the university’s long-term goals.”
Under his leadership, the university completed a $65 million capital campaign in 2009. He was instrumental in the acquisition of both the Wilbur H. Feltner Building in historic downtown Winchester in 2011 and Shenandoah’s River Campus at Cool Spring Battlefield in Bluemont, Virginia, in 2013.
Moore spearheaded major projects such as the Millwood Public Improvement Project and the year-long celebration of Shenandoah’s 50th anniversary in Winchester. He oversaw the development and launch of the university’s new brand and logo in 2011 and the All-Steinway Initiative, which was completed by the university in 2015.
Moore began his career in development work right out of college at his alma mater, the University of Richmond, where he spent 10 years rising through the ranks to director of major gifts. Subsequently, he has spent his entire career in nonprofit development work. In addition to Moore’s 28 years in higher education development, he also served as the senior development officer at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Over the course of his career, Moore has been involved in eight comprehensive fundraising campaigns.
Past appointments in higher education include associate vice president of advancement at Bridgewater College, vice president for development and college relations at Sweet Briar College, and vice president for development and alumni relations at James Madison University.
Moore has been active in CASE District III and is the chair-elect of the Top of Virginia Regional Chamber. He received his Bachelor of Arts in economics and history from the University of Richmond and his Master of Public Administration degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
