Student wins state award; pharmacy group participates in Capitol Hill roundtable
Pharmacy student Tanya Devine ’18, (above, left, with Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice Sarah Parnapy Jawaid, Pharm.D.) received the 2017 Harvey B. Morgan Award for Advancing Health Policy from the Virginia Pharmacists Association Foundation’s Morgan Institute. This competitive student award consists of a check for $1,000, a plaque, and a stipend for registration and accommodations for up to $300 to be used for attendance at the annual Virginia Pharmacists Association (VPhA) meeting in Virginia Beach, which occurred in September. Devine received her award at the meeting’s banquet. “I was humbled to have been nominated and to receive the Harvey B. Morgan Award for Advancing Health Policy,” Devine said. “As a fourth-year pharmacy student, I am grateful to my professors at Shenandoah University and mentors throughout my education for providing me with the skills and opportunities to advocate for the pharmacy profession. It is important that pharmacists, future and current, be recognized as important members of the healthcare team. Together we can voice our concerns as constituents to ensure legislation coincides with our goals in providing the utmost quality patient-centered care.”
Four student pharmacists – Carolyn Taylor ’18, Eric Stottelmyer ’18, Kelly Scott ’18 and Tony Rodriguez ’20 – competed in the NASPA/NMA Self-Care competition at the 136th Virginia Pharmacists Association (VPhA) Annual convention in Virginia Beach in September. Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice Sarah Parnapy Jawaid, Pharm.D., served as a judge for the competition. Alumni also attended the meeting, including Derek Parvizi ’12, Pharm.D., and Lauren Fox ’17, Pharm.D.
Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy student Lauren Abresch ’19, was accepted to the Junior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program (JRCOSTEP) with the Public Health Service. She worked this summer with the Indian Health Service in Rock Hill, South Carolina, in an ambulatory care setting.
Tatiana Wright ’17 won second place in the 2017 American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Virtual Poster Symposium Best Poster Competition. Wright’s poster on the “Frequency of the SLCO1B1 (rs4149056) polymorphism in Caucasians compared to Mexican Americans,” finished second only to a poster by a University of North Carolina pharmacy student. As a top three finisher, she was invited to present an “encore” poster at the 2017 ACCP Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
Online Clinical Coordinator (Ashburn Campus) and Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice Amber Darr, Pharm.D; Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Brandon Jennings, Pharm.D., BCACP; and Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice Sarah Parnapy Jawaid, Pharm.D.; resident Nichelle Logan, Pharm.D.; students Mike Wilson ’18, Emily Yeager ’18, Will Gage ’18, Tanya Devine ’18, Alex Meligakes ’20, Ashley Spier ’20, Jessica Szatkowski ’20 and Grace Falkenstein ’20, attended a roundtable discussion on Capitol Hill in September, regarding detailing sales and marketing tactics of Insys Therapeutics and opioid manufacturers. The discussion was spearheaded by Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri.
