Students travel to provide health care in Nicaragua, see work published, and win a competition and prestigious award

Shenandoah University pharmacy student Joe Robinson (P4), is the 2024 recipient of the Harvey B. Morgan Award for Advancing Health Policy. Among other criteria, recipients must demonstrate exceptional service, activity, and commitment in the area of policy development as well as apply their knowledge of pharmacy and policy to provide education and information to citizens, public officials, and pharmacy students/professionals. The award is bestowed by the The Harvey B. Morgan Institute of the Virginia Pharmacy Association Research and Education Foundation.

A dedicated interdisciplinary group of 41 health professionals and Shenandoah University health profession students recently completed a one-week service and learning trip to Leon, Nicaragua, to provide health care to eight rural communities. The teams consisted of physician assistant, pharmacy and physical therapy students supported by local physicians, a physical therapist, a registered nurse, pharmacy residents, and physician assistant and pharmacy faculty. Shenandoah had two pharmacy students, one pharmacy resident, and one pharmacy faculty member participate in the trip. The team also provided oral health preventive care for several hundred children, which was made possible by a grant from the nccPA Health Foundation. Approximately 100 patients were seen each day amongst the two teams and hundreds of prescriptions were filled.

The Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy was well represented at the 2024 Virginia Pharmacy Association Annual Meeting in Roanoke, Virginia. Many students, alumni, and both current and former faculty attended. Congratulations to Natasha Bokenko, Joe Robinson, Maranda Switzer and Leeann Williamson, who won the NASPA/NMA Self Care Competition.

Pharm.D. candidate Sidney Rorrer saw her work featured in the article, “Integration of pharmacist-led pharmacogenomics testing in cardiology clinical practice” published in Cardiology Today.
