The mission of the Shenandoah University Division of Counselor Education is to prepare diverse graduates who promote a wellness and social justice model in careers of counseling. We foster a supportive academic community that facilitates lifelong learning, critical thinking, and service learning.

Our faculty have extensive experience in a variety of settings, including outpatient counseling; inpatient acute crisis stabilization, forensic, and long-term psychiatric care; school/college counseling; and integrated behavior healthcare. Their clinical experience includes crisis and trauma counseling; relational interventions for survivors of interpersonal violence; global mental health initiatives for individuals in low- and middle-income groups and countries; addiction and substance use disorder; recovery-oriented cognitive therapy and more.
Locations

Health Professions Building
The in-person classes for our Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs are held at the Health Professions Building (HPB) on the campus of Winchester Medical Center, a highly regarded 495-bed regional referral facility with several mental health services. These include the EmPATH unit, which provides immediate care for people in crisis within a therapeutic environment as well as inpatient and outpatient behavioral healthcare.

Shenandoah Conservatory on Main Campus
Our Music Therapy & Professional Counseling program also includes courses offered through Shenandoah Conservatory on the university’s main campus. Shenandoah is the proud home of Virginia’s oldest music therapy program and the Marian Sung Music Therapy Center, which is designed as a music therapy clinic space to provide students with opportunities to simulate, observe and experience music therapy sessions. It is named after Professor Emeritus Marion Sung, B.A., M.M.Ed., who founded the music therapy program at Shenandoah University in 1974.
