What’s a Thrive Guide?
A Thrive Guide is an accountability partner who meets with students one-on-one to help them establish the skills needed to navigate college.
Thrive Guides are students who love helping their fellow Hornets! If you would like to receive this individualized support, please fill out the survey linked below so we can find the perfect match for you.
Program Goals and Objectives
- Assist students in feeling more connected to Shenandoah University
- Support Students in developing or refining their ability to articulate and formulate plans to actively pursue and achieve their academic and personal goals.
- Make students aware of resources available to them on campus
- Help students to develop or refine their study skills and time management abilities
- Inform students of the organizations and clubs that Shenandoah University has to offer
- Help students foster a growth mindset: We want to help students accept that there are things they do not know and develop a toolkit of strategies and resources to help them bridge the gap between what they do not yet know and all there is to know about themselves and their disciplines.

As a Thrive Guide, I want to help students set and achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals. Advice for an SU student: Don’t compare yourself to others. We are all unique and succeed in our own ways! Major: History and Esports Class Year: Junior Home State: West Virginia Campus Involvement: Shenandoah History Club, Hornet Ambassadors, Upstream Radio, Esports Experience for Professionals. What do you love about Thrive Guides? I’m so excited to help students discover the best way to balance their personal, social, academic, and professional lives. Everyone’s balance is unique to them and them alone! Advice for an SU Student: Self-care is key! Always strive for the best- as long as it does not interfere with your well-being. Never sacrifice your health. Major: Healthcare Management and Public Health Class Year: Junior Home State: North Carolina Campus Involvement: NJWC Peer Mentor, FYS Mentor, Resident Assistant, Shen First Gen, Public Health Club, Co-Event Coordinator of The Sting, Black Student Union What do you love about Thrive Guides? I am MOST excited to help students acclimate to college life. I remember coming in thinking I had it all figured out and I didn’t. That’s okay, but it’s so reassuring to have a mentor always in your corner and rooting for you early on. Advice for an SU Student: Be open to new experiences while keeping your goals in mind. Major: Nursing Class Year: Junior Home State: Virginia Campus Involvement: Women’s Lacrosse, The Hidden Opponent What do you love about Thrive Guides? I am most excited to help students succeed at Shenandoah and find their purpose! I love hearing about what students are passionate about and guiding them in a direction to achieve their goal. Advice for an SU Student: College is a time to get out of your comfort zone, so do things that make you uncomfortable as you will grow through the experience. Join organizations that you are passionate about and make your experience worth it! Most importantly, don’t give up when life gets tough. Major: Exercise Science and Psychology Class Year: Junior Home State: Virginia Campus Involvement: The Hidden Opponent, Hornet Ambassadors, Summer Orientation Leader, Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Lambda Delta, Psi Chi, Men’s Cross Country and Track What do you love about Thrive Guides? I am excited to help students realize their potential and accomplish things they did not know that they could, prior to coming to college! Advice for an SU Student: Take time for you. Slow down. Resources & Services
Writing Center
The Shenandoah University Writing Center takes as its primary mission one-to-one instruction in writing for all SU students. The Center also strives to promote and support writing across the curriculum, serving students from all courses at all levels.
Math Enrichment Center
The Math Enrichment Center is a free tutoring center open to all Shenandoah University students. The Center assists students from all disciplines to understand and apply the math skills beneficial to their course work, career goals, and interests.
Tutoring
Whether you need extra help in a course or just need further clarification of key concepts, Shenandoah University offers peer-tutoring sessions free of charge to Shenandoah students. Students may also apply to become tutors.
Advising
Having trouble connecting with your advisor? Struggling to create your class schedule? Need advice pursuing your academic major? Meet with an advising coordinator to have all your questions answered.

Accessibility is a right. Student Support Services collaborates with students, faculty and staff to create an educational environment that is equitable and inclusive for the university community.
