News from physician assistant studies, physical therapy and athletic training programs
Bailey Dove and Camtran Huynh, both members of the SU PA Program class of 2020, were selected to be student representatives to the board of the Virginia Rural Health Association (VRHA), a nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of 2.5 million people who live in rural Virginia. Dove is based at the Winchester campus and Huynh at Scholar Plaza, Loudoun.
Distinguished Professor and Director of the Division of Physician Assistant Studies Anthony A. Miller, M.Ed., PA-C, participated in May in the Santa Fe Group’s 2019 Salon “Comprehensive Health Without Oral Health: The Medicare Paradox,” in Arlington, Virginia. More than 25 leading educators, researchers, policy makers, consumer advocates and business leaders presented at the interactive program for the nation’s leading healthcare change agents. The event focuses on the need for Medicare to include oral health benefits.
The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) has re-accredited Shenandoah’s Master of Science in Athletic Training program for 10 more years. The program’s next CAATE venture will be meeting the new CAATE 2020 standards.
Associate Director Performing Arts Medicine Program, Assistant Professor Division of Athletic Training Michele Pye, Ph.D., and Janese Malone (MSAT Class of 2020) went on a medical missions trip to Ghana, Africa, this spring.
Program Director and Associate Professor of Athletic Training Rose Schmieg, D.H.Sc., and Assistant Professor of Athletic Training Katie Gilbert, MSAT/DPT, led a Global Experiential Learning (GEL) trip to Dublin City University (DCU) this spring where the Shenandoah group collaborated with DCU athletic therapy students along with enjoying Irish sightseeing and culture.
The Division of Athletic Training has officially joined the World Federation of Athletic Therapy and Training (WFATT). Dr. Pye attended the WFATT Spring Annual Symposium this year in Tokyo. The Division of Athletic Training plans to seek out more international experiences for the program involving SU MSAT students traveling abroad and students from abroad coming to Shenandoah.
Shenandoah University faculty and alumni convened in Chicago this summer for the 75th American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) House of Delegates. Those who participated included Kyle Feldman (’14); Josh Bailey (’97); Janine Hatch (Associate Director, tDPT program); Lee Ann Eagler (’03); Director of Clinical Education, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy Megan Bureau, DPT, (’04, DCE); Associate Professor of Physical Therapy Jill Boissonnault, Ph.D., (Associate Director, DPT program); Sara Knox (’03); Jenise Engelke (’05); John Heick (’03); Laurie Brooks Burns (’97); and Vic Vaughan (faculty, tDPT).
Physical therapy student Dominique Norris ’20, has received The Move, Play, Speak Scholarship established by Coastal Healthcare Services in Washington, D.C. The scholarship assists graduate students in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech language pathology who demonstrate an interest in practicing pediatrics post-graduation. Norris and Sarah Strong ’20, have been accepted into Georgetown University’s GEORGE program. The 10-month GEORGE program (Graduate Education of Related Service Providers at Georgetown and George Washington Universities in Early Intervention) is offered to students during the final year of their professional preparation program.
