HARRIET Film Screening

Friday, November 1 | 6:15 pm

The HARRIET Film Screening will be hosted by the Mosaic Center for free on Friday, Nov. 1, 6:15 pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (181 Kernstown Commons Blvd, Winchester, VA 22602). Join us in watching the powerful film that chronicles Harriet Tubman’s brave defiance of slavery and oppression. Space is limited to the first 35 guests who sign up on the Harriet Film Screening Google Form by Wednesday, October 30th.

Monday, November 4 | 11 a.m-3 p.m

Woke Table is from 11 a.m-3 p.m. in the Brandt Student Center main hallway on Monday, Nov. 4. Where does the word ‘woke’ come from? What does it mean to ‘stay woke’? Stop by the table to discover the meaning of this popular term. Don’t forget to enter the raffle for a Woke Week shirt! 

HARRIET Lunch Dialogue

Monday, November 4th | 12 – 1:30 pm

HARRIET Lunch Dialogue happens from 12 – 1:30 pm on Monday, November 4th in the Mosaic Center. This is a follow-up discussion on the movie screening of “Harriet”. If you attended the Friday, Nov. 1 screening at the Alamo Drafthouse or have seen the film otherwise, please join us in a guided discussion about your experience with the movie, your thoughts on the importance of this film, and the understanding of how this history has impacted modern-day white privilege and modern-day racism. Wannabe Woke? Vote. Table is from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. in the Brandt Student Center main hallway on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Do you understand the power of one vote? Did you know not everyone has an equal opportunity to vote? Learn about different barriers people face to cast their vote and make their voices heard on Election Day. Don’t forget to enter the raffle for a Woke Week shirt! 

Voting Shuttles

Tuesday, November 5th | 10 am – 5 pm

Voting Shuttles will be run from 10 am – 5 pm on Tuesday, November 5th. Shuttles will leave every 30 minutes from the Wannabe Woke? Vote. table in the Brandt Student Center main hallway. Be sure to bring identification (Driver’s License, University ID, etc.) and know your polling location. 

Study Abroad, Culture Shock, and Identity (trans*) Formation Dinner Dialogue

Wednesday, November 6th | 6 p.m.

Study Abroad, Culture Shock, and Identity (trans*) Formation Dinner Dialogue begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6th in Cooley 106. This discussion will focus on study abroad opportunities (focusing on the Gilman Scholarship), culture shock in its many forms, and identity transformation as it relates to the many intersecting identities we each hold as human beings. One of the facilitators, Maddie Bohnett, will share their experiences with these aspects of studying abroad within the framework of their recent study abroad in Vienna, Austria that focused on musicology and EuroPride 2019. In collaboration with the Shenandoah Conservatory Student Council and the Study Abroad Office, come and join us to talk about music, traveling, and more! Love is Love and Gender Awareness Table

Love is Love and Gender Awareness Table is from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m on Thursday, Nov. 7 in Brandt Student Center main hallway. June 26, 2015, same-sex marriage became legal. Yay! So, we’re done, right? WRONG. The LGBTQ+ community still faces discrimination in 2019. Stop by the table to learn information about government bans still affecting the community and the process of changing your name and pronouns. Also pick-up a pride flag sticker to show your support. Don’t forget to sign in for a chance to win prizes!

Desserts and Discussions: “I’m not Mixed” is from 6 pm – 7:30 pm on Thursday, Nov. 7 in the Mosaic Center. What is it like to be a person of multiple ethnicities? What struggles have you overcome? How do you fit into different cultures and find a sense of belonging? Not only will you hear stories, but you’ll have the opportunity to tell your own. Navigate understanding people with different perspectives and enjoy tasty (and free!) desserts.
