School of Health Professions News: Spring/Early Summer 2020

Faculty Tapped for Research and Expertise; Students Assist Community

Division of Physician Assistant Studies Distinguished Professor and Director Anthony Miller, M.Ed., PA-C, along with Bettie Coplan, MPAS, PA-C, of Northern Arizona University, received funding from the Physician Assistant Education Association to conduct scholarship and new research related to the impact of doctoral entry-level degrees in the health professions.

Associate Professor of Physical Therapy Lisa McVey, DPT, was named the inaugural SU FITT Award Winner for 2020. She was honored for her innovation in teaching. Her utilization of technology in the classroom has provided students with great learning opportunities.

Shenandoah Division of Physical Therapy students Sam Sova ’21 and Sarah Strong ’20 assisted with the COVID-19 pandemic response with the Loudoun Makersmiths, by making face shields with a 3D printer for first responders. 

Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy Michele Wiley, PT, DPT, DHSc, discussed the possibilities for telehealth in providing school-based therapy services in Education Week. Dr. Wiley also recently earned her second doctoral degree. She earned her DHSc in Rehabilitation Science from Drexel University. Wiley’s dissertation was “Characteristics of school-based physical therapists and students associated with inclusive physical therapy practices: A secondary data analysis from PT COUNTS.”
