To reduce the density of our community, Shenandoah has established outdoor spaces throughout campus where students can study, learn or take a break.
These spaces are categorized as either Break and Study Spaces or Outdoor Classrooms and include gazebos, tables with umbrellas, and tents in sizes from 900 to 2,500 square feet. Each space will be equipped with tables, chairs, hand sanitizer and Wi-Fi. Capacity for these spaces ranges from eight to 30 people.
Currently, we have set up seven Break and Study Spaces on the main campus and one at the Health Professions Building on the Winchester Medical Center campus. These are spaces where students can hang out or study, all while adhering to social distancing and wearing a mask if six feet apart is not attainable. Students taking classes remotely through ShenFlex can use these spaces to virtually participate in their courses. Break and Study Spaces located near the Allen Dining Hall may also be used for overflow dining.
We’ve also created several large outdoor classrooms: five spaces on main campus (four tents and an area of gazebos outside Smith Library) and one tent at the Health Professions Building. The outdoor classrooms on main campus are located near the Armory Building, Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre, Sarah’s Glen, Smith Library, and Lot D near the Brandt Student Center.
Signage will help students, faculty and staff to determine which spaces are classrooms and which are Break and Study Spaces. These spaces will be available throughout the semester. Faculty can reserve outdoor classrooms starting next week at EMS.
