Naumenko Premieres New Work by Newman at Bright Box

Assistant Professor of Voice (Soprano) Fotina Naumenko, D.M.A., will premiere “Bespoke Songs,” a new work written for her by Director of Composition, Coordinator of New Music and Associate Professor of Composition Jonathan Newman, M.M., at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, at the Bright Box Theater in Old Town Winchester during the ‘Love Surrounded’ performance presented by the EDGE Ensemble.

“The piece is huge, with twelve songs on texts by women in six languages, spanning 2,500 years in time, including new contemporary text written for us by a contemporary poet,” said Newman.

The nearly-all-faculty ensemble with which Fotina will sing will include Anna Lee van Buren Endowed Chair in Clarinet, Coordinator of Winds and Percussion and Professor of Clarinet Garrick Zoeter, M.M.; Chair of Instrumental Division, Coordinator for Conservatory in the Community and Professor of Saxophone Tim Roberts, D.M.A.; Victor Brown Endowed Chair in Violin and Associate Professor of Violin Akemi Takayama, M.M.; Assistant Professor of Cello Julian Schwarz, M.M.; Assistant Professor of Percussion Karlyn Viña, D.M.A.; Visiting Assistant Professor of Piano Pedagogy and Performance Marika Bournaki, M.M., and guitarist Hang Yin ’24 (Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance). Renowned conductor, violinist and violist Nadège Foofat will conduct the ensemble.
