Shenandoah VP Honored By United Way Of Northern Shenandoah Valley

Vice President for Student Affairs Yolanda Barbier Gibson Named 2021 Campaign Volunteer of the Year

Shenandoah University Vice President for Student Affairs Yolanda Barbier Gibson, D.A., is the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley’s 2021 Campaign Volunteer of the Year.

“I am truly honored and humbled to not only have been nominated for such an award but to also receive the award. It came as a total surprise as I joined the UWNSV Board of Directors in 2021, and to obtain an award during my first year as a board member is a true honor,” said Dr. Gibson.

For someone relatively new to the organization, Gibson has made a major impact on the United Way and the Winchester region at large.

“In her time volunteering with United Way, she has launched our Women United Group, facilitated our Day of Caring event kickoff at Shenandoah University, kicked off the fundraising campaign for hundreds at SU, and recently launched a drive for air mattresses, that is still currently underway, that is well on its way to reaching its goal,” the United Way of NSV states on its website. The Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes a commitment to fundraising success, creativity in reaching new donors and an “exemplary effort” toward reaching financial success, the United Way of NSV site states.

The entire 2021 campaign raised more than $1 million to benefit people in need in Winchester, as well as in Clarke, Frederick, Page, and Shenandoah counties.

“It has always been important to give back to the community, but to encourage the faculty, staff, and students to participate in the annual campaign, Project Connect, and Day of Caring is a true blessing. I love working with such a giving and caring community here at SU,” Gibson said. “While I was recognized for the award, it was because of our faculty, staff, and students.

So thank you Hornets for answering the call whenever I asked you to participate in a volunteer event, donate to a drive, or contribute to the United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley. It is because of you that we can make an impact on the lives of individuals and families living in the City of Winchester and the counties of Clarke, Frederick, Page, and Shenandoah.”
