Earth Day, April 22, marks the official launch of Waste Stream 2, an initiative of the new Institute for Business, Sustainability & Society (IBSS) at Shenandoah University. Inspired by Elvis & Kresse, a British luxury brand best known for belts, bags and wallets made from decommissioned fire hoses and donates half its profits to charity, Waste Stream 2 is working with regional manufacturers to rescue materials from the landfill and identify new and productive uses. The project is managed by two Shenandoah University School of Business students, Conor Bailey ’23 and Tim Dean ’22, who recently pitched their ideas to the business school’s Advisory Board.

It’s exciting to visit local companies and learn about the practical opportunities and challenges in the transition to a circular economy.”

– Tim Dean ’22

Professor Giles Jackson, Ph.D., director of IBSS, has high hopes for the venture.

We’re seeking grants to support this initiative, and we’re in discussions with entrepreneurship faculty to help scale the project and incubate student-run start-ups.”

– Giles Jackson, Ph.D., professor of stakeholder capitalism and director of the Institute for Business, Sustainability & Society
