Shenandoah’s Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders makes a direct impact on its surrounding communities and clients across the nation by offering the services of its Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic at Shenandoah’s Loudoun location for free.

An invaluable experience for students and clients

Students in Shenandoah’s Master of Science in speech-language pathology are supervised by licensed and certified faculty clinicians as they work with clients in the pro bono clinic.

“The clinic’s work is extremely valuable to me and other students as it offers us a chance to experience providing services with individuals within a supportive environment. As we are learning about diagnostic materials and intervention practices, we get to apply our knowledge in assessing and treating clients,” said Addison Rathel ’26.

“As a graduate student clinician, I provided therapy services under supervision, implemented individualized treatment plans, and collaborated with peers, my supervisor, and the clients’ families to support their progress,” said Anna Santiago ’26. “The clinic’s work allowed me to apply what I have learned in a hands-on setting while continuing to grow as a clinician.”

“When I was on campus and involved in our clinic last year, I provided services for children targeting speech sound production, children receiving language interventions, adults receiving gender affirming voice care, adults receiving accent modification services, adults with Parkinson’s Disease, and more,” Rathel said. “I collaborated with partners and professors to support clients via telehealth and in person. It was a wonderful experience.”

Speech services are provided to people of all ages. Conditions addressed include aphasia, Parkinson voice, cognitive disorders, autism, speech sound disorders, child language disorders, motor speech disorders, gender-affirming voice, accent modification, dementia, hearing screenings, and voice and resonance disorders. Faculty supervisors and clinicians are also certified to provide the Parkinson Voice Project SPEAK OUT! Therapy Program.

Clients are seen either in-person or through telehealth appointments via Zoom. The clinic is able to work only with clients who reside in California, Virginia, Arizona, Maryland, and North Carolina. The clinic, based in Virginia, schedules sessions based on Eastern time.
