Shenandoah University to Welcome Ukrainian Students This Fall

SU is helping the 3 learners further their academic careers

Shenandoah University is pleased to announce that it is helping three students from Ukraine in their pursuits to further their education this academic year. Shenandoah is prepared to welcome students Artem Babaiev, Iryna Horodnycha and Illia Kozlov to campus when the Fall 2022 semester begins in late August.

We are thrilled to welcome home three learners from Ukraine to our Winchester campus this fall. This has truly been a community-driven effort and a compelling depiction of higher education’s power to lead with impact in times of crisis. Illia, Iryna, and Artem each have unique, inspiring stories of resilience and intention, which leaves little doubt they will have an outsized impact at Shenandoah.”

“It’s been a harrowing journey for these students,” said Astrid Sheil, Ph.D., dean of the School of Business. “As of Aug. 6, two of the students have received passage and we await word on the third, Artem Babaiev. Our entire faculty are grateful for the efforts of Ukrainian authorities and those on the ground at SU who are always ready to affirm the acceptance of these students into our community. With classes beginning within weeks, the effort has been incredible.”

Babaiev, who is enrolled in Shenandoah’s business administration program, will compete for the Hornets’ men’s tennis program this fall. Shenandoah head tennis coach Jason Cole called Babaiev, who is from Kharkiv, Ukraine, an “excellent” player with an established background in the sport.

“We’re very excited to have Artem join our program,” Cole said. “His talent level as a tennis player takes us up a notch, and we’re excited to add a player of his caliber to our team.”

Horodnycha also is enrolled in SU’s Business Administration program, and Kozlov is enrolled in the information technology program within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Traveling to the U.S. has been a dream of a lifetime for me. An opportunity to study there is something I couldn’t ever imagine. However, thanks to Shenandoah University, I can earn a degree in IT and go on to pursue a career in technology. I just can’t put into words how happy I am.
