Shenandoah University Welcomes New Sorority Alpha Gamma Delta

Alpha Gam is Shenandoah’s first sorority; adds more Greek life opportunities for students

Shenandoah University students will soon have more opportunities to experience Greek life, as the university welcomes the social sorority Alpha Gamma Delta (ΑΓΔ) to the university community starting in Fall 2025.

Though Shenandoah students have long had the opportunity to participate in Greek life clubs and honor societies on campus, Alpha Gamma Delta is SU’s first national social sorority. This addition will provide Shenandoah’s students with leadership opportunities, academic support, career connections through alumni networks, and a lasting sense of community that will extend beyond their time at Shenandoah.

Alpha Gamma Delta will maintain a physical presence on Shenandoah University’s main campus in Winchester, Virginia, but the organization’s addition to the SU community will not include university-sponsored sorority housing.

Shenandoah’s exploration of fraternity and sorority life started in 2023, when students expressed interest in adding communities to campus that furthered the mission of the university while adding new experiences for students. The Office of Student Leadership and Engagement and a committee composed of university students, staff, faculty and Board of Trustees members reviewed interested organizations, facilitated campus visits, and gathered student feedback to identify organizations that aligned with Shenandoah’s values and would enhance the university experience.

We’re thrilled to welcome Alpha Gamma Delta into our university community. When members of Alpha Gam visited our campus in early March, we quickly realized that their organization’s values and commitment to community service were a great fit for our university. We’re proud to be able to provide our students with the special opportunities afforded by Alpha Gam and its nationwide network of collegiate members and alumnae, and we can’t wait to see how this new partnership enhances the student experience at Shenandoah University.”

Alpha Gamma Delta, which was founded in 1904, is an international women’s organization that is committed to the professional growth of its members while emphasizing community service. Alpha Gam challenges members to lead lives of significance that positively impact their communities, guided by two main functions of philanthropy: service and fundraising.

Alpha Gamma Delta’s philanthropic focus is fighting hunger. Alpha Gam works with national organizations such as Feeding America and Meals on Wheels, and partners with local organizations in the communities where its college chapters and alumnae chapters and clubs are located.

Alpha Gamma Delta is composed of over 200,000 members, 118 active collegiate chapters and over 100 alumnae groups. Shenandoah will be Alpha Gam’s 200th established chapter. Keep up with the Shenandoah University chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta on Instagram (@su_alphagam).

We could not be more excited for Alpha Gamma Delta to become part of the Shenandoah family! From the moment we arrived on campus, we felt the energy, the positivity, and the opportunity that abound at SU. Alpha Gam looks forward to participating in all of the Shenandoah traditions, and to creating our own as we recruit our founding class this fall. We think this is a perfect match of values alignment, priorities, and commitment to the student experience.”
