Broadway’s Schworer Guest Directs and Choreographs ‘Catch Me If You Can’ at Shenandoah Conservatory

Shenandoah Conservatory welcomes Broadway star Angie Schworer as guest director and choreographer for its production of “Catch Me If You Can.” Performances will take place Thursday, Feb. 26, through Sunday, March 1, in Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre on Shenandoah University’s main campus.

“I was lucky enough to work on the production as a cast member for seven years as it was coming to Broadway,” said Schworer, who was the original Cindy in the show. “I think the score is out of this world and can’t wait to relive it all with this amazing cast.”

Schworer brings an extraordinary career of Broadway and national touring experience to the Shenandoah Conservatory stage. Best known for originating the role of Angie in “The Prom,” she received critical acclaim for her show-stopping performance, including a Drama Desk Award nomination. Schworer’s impressive Broadway credits also include “Something Rotten!,” “Big Fish,” “The Producers,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Chicago” and “Sunset Boulevard.” Beyond Broadway, she has appeared on television and film, and she continues to be a sought-after performer, teacher and creative collaborator.

“The musical theatre program is incredibly excited to welcome Broadway icon Angie Schworer to campus to direct and choreograph our production of ‘Catch Me If You Can,’” said Charles B. Levitin Chair in Musical Theatre, Director of Musical Theatre, Coordinator for Musical Theatre Recruitment and Associate Professor of Theatre Kevin Covert, B.F.A. “Angie was a part of the cast of the original Broadway production of the show and has a close professional relationship with the original director and choreographer, Jerry Mitchell. Our production also reunites Angie with our fabulous music director, Patrick Brady. Patrick was the original music director on Broadway for ‘The Producers’ in which Angie was also in the original cast before assuming the leading role of Ulla. Angie‘s longevity in the business, paired with her infectious spirit and commitment to excellence, will provide our students with great knowledge and a beautiful example of how hard work and training can pay off.”

Based on the hit film and the true story of con artist Frank Abagnale, Jr., “Catch Me If You Can” follows a teenager who successfully poses as a pilot, doctor and lawyer — all before his 21st birthday. With a jazzy, high-energy score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (“Hairspray”), dazzling choreography and heartfelt storytelling, the musical is a spectacular blend of comedy, crime caper and coming-of-age tale.

Harold Herman Chair in Musical Theatre, Music Director and Professor of Theatre Patrick Brady will serve as music director for the production. Brady is also a seasoned Broadway professional.

This performance is sponsored by Crescent Cities Charities, which provides educational assistance to promising students with financial need, and supports charities and community organizations. Learn more at cccharities.org.
