Professional Bio

Amy K. Bormet is a pianist, vocalist and composer known for her fearless free-wheeling style and dedication to creating new music. She co-founded Strange Woman Records with Matt Dievendorf in 2019. To collaborate with and celebrate women musicians, she started the annual Washington Women in Jazz Festival in 2011, directing, financing, and performing in an annual festival and women-focused events throughout the year in the D.C. area.

As a composer, Bormet works with the interplay between what is seen and what is imagined through emotional events in the music. Through mediums of musical collaborative storytelling in film and theatre, crafting lyrics and melodies as a singer/songwriter, or improvising with others, she invites her collaborators and audience to expand their space for expressive possibility.

Her clinics and workshops blend jazz tradition with contemporary practice, emphasizing improvisation, entrepreneurial skills and cross-genre exploration. Bromet’s experience as a performer, producer and arts advocate equips her to engage university students in meaningful dialogue about artistry, identity and professional development—making her a dynamic and inspiring presence in academic settings.
