Who can become a Preceptor?
A preceptor can be a MD, PA, or NP with a Specialty in the same clinical field as the requested experience. For example, our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Students may be precepted by a Psychiatrist, PMHNP, or PA with Psych specialty.
Preceptors must have been practicing in their Specialty area for at least 1 year.
What is the time commitment?
Our Family Nurse Practitioner students need 180 clinical hours a semester. An 80 hour PEDS experience is included in one of the semesters, therefore some experiences may be 100 hours.
Our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner students generally need 240 clinical hours a semester. This may be split between two different specialties, like 120 hours of Child and Adolescent and 120 hours of Adult.
What type of evaluation or paperwork will I need to complete?
We track all clinical experiences through the Exxat system. You will therefore receive an email, stating CLICK HERE, and a form will be available for you to fill out and submit it. Evaluation questions will ask you to rate the student and provide feedback on the student during the clinical experience. This process is easy to use and there is no need to upload and download paperwork.
Does anyone come to my practice?
Yes, during the semester, Graduate Faculty assigned to this student will come to observe the student at the site and answer any questions you or the student may have.
Can another provider in my practice fill in if I am unavailable?
We prefer that the student is with the assigned preceptor throughout the clinical experience in order to be able to properly evaluate and give feedback at the end of the clinical experience. If the preceptor is out of the office and another qualified preceptor is in the office, it is acceptable for the student to spend a small portion of the total semester experience with another provider in the same office (contracted organization). The name and qualifications should be supplied to the Graduate Clinical Placement Coordinator.
