The McCormick Civil War Institute Needs Your Help!

CWI has an ambitious agenda, but we need your help to realize our goals and make CWI one of the premier institutions for studying and learning about the Civil War era. While some of the events sponsored by CWI generate a bit of revenue, it is not nearly enough for CWI to realize its goals and potential. Some of the projects CWI will undertake in the coming months that would greatly benefit from your financial support are:

  • Development and publication of a walking trails brochure for the Cool Spring Battlefield. This detailed guide would be free to visitors to the site.
  • Development of a permanent exhibit in the Lodge at Cool Spring focusing on the battle and its aftermath.
  • The creation of an annual journal – The Journal of the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War Era – which will provide the first-ever scholarly publication devoted to the study of the Civil War era in the region. This journal will not only feature contributions from established historians in the field, but provide an opportunity for exceptional history students at Shenandoah University to publish original research.
  • The development of an annual free public lecture series focusing on some aspect of Civil War history. Ideally, CWI would invite two nationally recognized historians to campus each year to deliver a free public lecture.
  • Creation of a permanent scholarship fund, which will help cover the costs for students attending Civil War Institute conferences.
  • Creation of battlefield excursions exclusively for Shenandoah University Civil War students.
  • Development of a summer Civil War history camp for students in public schools.

If you would like to make a contribution to the Civil War Institute to support these exciting efforts, CWI would be most appreciative. If there is a cause that is particularly near and dear to your heart among the many initiatives listed above, you may earmark your donation for that. Any amount, however big or small, will go a long way to support the mission and goals of the Civil War Institute – one of the most significant of which is making certain that younger generations understand the Civil War’s importance in the history of our great nation.
