Trinity Wall Street Presents Premiere of MASS by Jonathan Newman

New York, NY May 4, 2018—The Choir of Trinity Wall Street and new music ensemble Novus NY to present new mass by American composer Jonathan Newman.

On May 17, 2018, Jonathan Newman’s new multi-movement mass, with texts by noted American poet Victoria Chang, will premiere as part of Trinity Wall Street’s Total Embrace Festival, and Mass Reimaginings Commissioning Project.

Conducted by Julian Wachner, Trinity Wall Street’s Director of Music and the Arts, and sung by the Grammy-nominated Choir of Trinity Wall Street, this new mass was commissioned as part of a series celebrating the 45th Anniversary of the Bernstein Mass, as well as Bernstein’s 100th birthday, with five 21st-century takes on the traditional mass.

The holder of a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Jonathan Newman composes music rich with rhythmic drive and intricate sophistication, creating broadly colored musical works that incorporate styles of pop, blues, jazz, folk, and funk into otherwise classical models. His works include “Blow It Up, Start Again,” which has been performed by orchestras worldwide, including the Minnesota Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, the 2015 Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the 2015 BBC Proms. His works have been recorded on Avian, BCM, Brain Music, Cantaloupe, Cedille, Klavier, Mark Custom, Naxos, Potenza, and Summit Records.

Poet Victoria Chang is the winner of the PEN Center USA Literary Award and California Book Award, and her poems have appeared in the Kenyon Review, American Poetry Review, POETRY, Believer, New England Review, VQR, The Nation, New Republic, Tinhouse, Best American Poetry, and elsewhere. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Sustainable Arts Foundation Fellowship in 2017, along with Poetry Society of America’s Alice Fay di Castagnola Award in 2018 for her manuscript-in-progress, OBIT.

Also included on the program is Bernstein’s last major composition, “Arias and Barcarolles.”

The concert will start at 1 p.m. Admission is free. This concert will also be livestreamed. Visit trinitywallstreet.org/music-arts/season/mass-reimaginings for more information.
