National Jazz Workshop Celebrates Successful 10th Anniversary Event

Shenandoah Conservatory hosted the 10th annual National Jazz Workshop from July 15, through July 20. Directed by Adjunct Associate Professor of Classical and Jazz Trombone Matt Niess, D.M.A., and hosted by Harrison Endowed Chair in Piano and Associate Professor of Jazz Piano Bob Larson ’08, D.M.A., the workshop featured guest artists, masterclasses, clinics and performances by the 95 participants. The National Jazz Workshop All-Star Big Band performed the opening concert, and The U.S. Airmen of Note, The U.S. Army Blues Swamp Romp, Dixie Power Trio, and a reunion of the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra were the featured ensembles performing concerts for the participants and public. Shenandoah faculty provided clinics and masterclasses throughout the week. The event ended with performances by the four big bands, little big band and trombone choir, as well as a reading session of the arrangements and compositions written during the week by arranging-track participants.
