Romano – 2017/18 News Highlights
In August 2017, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Theory Charlene Baughan Romano, D.M.A. (in progress), rejoined the Shenandoah Conservatory faculty while continuing to perform, write, teach workshops and adjudicate and manage an active home flute studio. She also assisted with managing and coaching the Apple Valley Flute Choir, as well as serving as coordinator of the Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir Competition. Romano also performed on the Shenandoah Conservatory Horn Studio Recital in Franz Doppler’s “L’Oiseau Des Bois” for flute and four horns.
In September 2017, Romano published a feature article in Flute Talk Magazine, “Developing a Studio in a Rural Area.”
In February 2018, Romano facilitated the Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention.
In April 2018, Romano partnered with Assistant Professor of Music Theory Rachel Short, Ph.D., to host Dr. Jenny Snodgrass, professor and coordinator of music theory at Appalachian State University. Snodgrass visited theory classes, presented a Lunch and Learn Seminar, and held an informal sit-down chat with theory students after the seminar.
In June 2018, Romano served as a guest artist for the New Organ Dedication Recital at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Woodstock, Virginia. She also served on the flute faculty and as a guest performing artist for the Middleburg (Virginia) Chamber Music Festival. Romano also performed Amy Beach’s Theme and Variations for flute and strings as a guest artist on the Middleburg Concert Series. The concert also featured Peabody Institute faculty pianist Brian Ganz and musicians from Mexico, Venezuela, Russia and Lithuania.
In July 2018, she served once again on the flute faculty for the local Frederick County (Virginia) Band Camp and was the only non-band director faculty on the staff. She taught flute masterclasses, flute extended techniques and woodwind ensemble. Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Theory Amanda Bono, D.M.A., was invited to be a guest lecturer in the flute extended techniques class to work with students on developing parameters on their class composition.
