Mental Health First Aid Training Available

You can be the difference and connect someone to care by providing Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). The Office of the Dean of Students offers a workshop for all staff and faculty to be trained in MHFA, which is an evidence-based program that teaches “first-aiders” how to assist a person through a mental health crisis. Just as CPR or other first-aid training can teach someone how to intervene in a physical emergency, MHFA trains you how to respond and help some experiencing a mental health emergency. No clinical experience is needed. MHFA provides you with information about common mental health disorders and problems, how to recognize risk factors and symptoms of certain mental health disorders or problems and a five-step action plan to help someone safely navigate through a mental health crisis until they can seek professional care. The program is an eight-hour certification program.

The Office of the Dean of Students is offering the following workshops for staff and faculty to learn how they can assist students (as well as coworkers, family and friends) experiencing a mental health crisis. These workshops are offered on the following dates:

One-Day, Full-Day Trainings from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (You must be able to attend the entire workshop time.):

• Friday, May 24

• Thursday, Aug. 1

• Friday, Aug. 2

• Wednesday, Oct. 16

Two-Day, Half-Day Trainings from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (You must attend the two-day groupings if you choose the half-day training sessions. You must be able to attend the entire workshop time.):

• Thursday, May 22

• Friday, May 24

• Thursday, Oct. 17

• Friday, Oct. 18

If you have any questions or would like to register for these valuable workshops, please contact Safety and Health Programs Coordinator Sarah Celec at scelec112@su.edu.
