May 2019 Class Notes
On April 28, Bobby Spiers (C ’69) was honored at an awards ceremony held by the Richmond Times-Dispatch (RT-D) for the 365 “Correspondent of the Day” recipients for the year 2018. Spiers was one of the top five finalists for the 2018 “Correspondent of the Year” title, all of whom read their entries aloud at the ceremony. The event was held at the Hanover County, Virginia, paper processing plant of the RT-D. (Pictured second from the left.)
Michael Harris (P ’01) was chosen as Pharmacy Manager of the Year by Wal-Mart in Bluefield, Virginia.
On May 2, 2019, Bill Powell (C ’04, C ’12, C ’13) performed with Chris Collins and Boulder Canyon at the Cugnet Centre in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Powell plays the piano and keyboard in this John Denver tribute band.
Patrick McCoy (C ’05) has become a freelance writer for The Washington Post. In April, McCoy had his first classical music concert review published, in which he covered the début of renowned concert violinist Daniel Hope at The Phillips Collection.
Catherine Adams (AS ’12, N ’15, B ’18) and Matthew Burke were married on Oct. 6, 2018, at the Old Stone Church in Winchester, Virginia. Her grandmother was married in the same church more than 50 years ago. Multiple Shenandoah alumni were in attendance, including Brittani Dodson Vickers (N ’15) and Carolyn Wessel (N ’15). In May, Jeremiah Smallridge (C ’12) and guest soloist, Meghan Lambert joined the Greenbrier Valley Chorale in toasting the music of the theater during concerts in Lewisburg and Clifton Forge, Virginia. They performed the popular Brindisi (drinking song) from Verdi’s “La Traviata” and selections from “Die Fledermaus” (The Bat), an operetta by Johann Strauss II. Smallridge also performed “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” from the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Oklahoma.”
Michael Mendillo (C ’13, C ’15) has been promoted to director of strategic partnerships at the Orlando Science Center in Orlando, Florida.
Marcus Jenkins (B ’16) is a tickets sales associate for the Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore, Maryland.
George Cluster (B ’17) is manager of corporate partnerships with the Aberdeen Ironbirds, a minor league team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles.

In April, Shenandoah University held its inaugural Virginia Emerging Filmmakers Festival. More than 75 short films were submitted by high school and college students from across the United States. Forty-two films, selected by filmmakers and Shenandoah University faculty, were reviewed by guest judges for the festival. Out of the 18 film festival winners, four were Shenandoah students and one was a Shenandoah alumna, Osinachi Ibe (HP ’17).
On April 28 and 29, 2019, Colt Scott (AS ’17) competed at Rash Field in Baltimore, Maryland, for a chance to be a competitor on season 11 of American Ninja Warrior.
Aaron Chow (C ’18) advanced to the semifinals of the Maria Canals International Piano Competition in Barcelona, Spain. More than 200 pianists from around the world applied for this competition, 70 were accepted to play in the first round, 18 qualified for the second round and only eight made it to the semifinals. Debra Moore-Zierow (N ’18) and three of her colleagues opened The Changing Tide, a new private psychiatric and wellness practice in Mathews, Virginia. The practice is a rural extension of Psychiatric Consultants of Hampton Roads.
Amanda Rosado’s (C ’09, C ’18) research, “Adolescents’ Experiences of Music Therapy in an Inpatient Crisis Stabilization Unit,” was accepted for publication in the Music Therapy Perspectives journal. (Pictured to the left.)
