Counseling Center Adds Two to Team

Christine Cornwell, Erica Penn Aim to Help Students Feel and Be Their Best

Shenandoah welcomes two new faces in its Counseling Center.

Christine Cornwell, M.A., and Erica Penn, M.S., are both Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC).

Christine holds her LPC in both Virginia and Connecticut. Prior to joining Shenandoah, Christine worked as a clinician at the University of New Haven in Connecticut, where she gained insight into the unique struggles that college students face on a daily basis. Christine has professional experience working in higher levels of care, both at the residential and intensive outpatient level. She has extensive training and a particular interest in working with eating disorders and body image issues.

Joining the SU team is very exciting to me, as I’ve already seen how much the university functions as a family. To be able to join the Counseling Center and help with the important work they’ve already been doing, I feel very lucky and excited. I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to serve as an ally and advocate for all of our students and help them on their own journeys to feeling like their best selves.

Christine is also passionate about animal assisted therapy and has a registered therapy dog herself. Christine and her dog, Brue, are both thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the Shenandoah and Winchester communities. Joining Shenandoah feels like a homecoming of sorts, as she was raised in the Winchester area but has not lived in Virginia for the past decade. Outside of therapy, Christine enjoys hiking, crocheting, yoga and spending the majority of her time with her 7-month-old baby girl.

Erica Penn is an LPC in Virginia. She has worked with children, young adults, and adults in both individual and group settings. Erica’s goal for herself is to provide an open and genuine space to help students navigate their paths, and she hopes to empower students to make healthy and positive choices.

I am very excited to be at Shenandoah. I hope to help students by providing a safe and open space for each individual to work on being and feeling their best, whatever that may look like for them. It is my goal to help the Counseling Center further grow in becoming a known and trusted resource for SU students.

Erica lives in Winchester with her husband, daughter, dog and three cats. She unwinds and promotes self-care through exercise, spending time with friends and family, reading (preferably Stephen King), and movie nights with her family.
