Salute to Veterans Week 2023

November 4 – November 11, 2023

One day just isn’t enough to honor the service of veterans of the U.S. armed forces, which is why we’re celebrating veterans on campus and throughout the community for the entire week leading up to Veterans Day.

Throughout this week, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to offer your thanks and appreciation to those who have served:

National Museum of the Marine Corps Tour
Saturday, Nov. 4 | 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. | Marine Corps Museum

The National Museum of the Marine Corps explores the history and celebrates the accomplishments and sacrifices of this branch of the U.S. armed forces. Shenandoah is providing free transportation to the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Nov. 4. The bus will leave the Brandt Student Center parking lot (Lot D) at 8 a.m. and return to campus around 4 p.m. Participants will be able to explore the museum on their own.

People who register by Thursday, Oct. 26, have the option to request a lunch from Devil Dog Diner as part of the trip. Those who register after Oct. 26 will need to provide their own lunch. This event is sponsored by the offices of Inclusion, Diversity & Equity and Student Leadership & Engagement, as well as Shenandoah Veterans and Supporters.

Election Day Celebration*
Tuesday, Nov. 7 | 2 – 5 p.m. | BSC Leadership Lawn

U.S. military veterans have all sworn to uphold the U.S. Constitution, the document that forms the bedrock of our nation’s laws and guarantees U.S. citizens the right to vote. Shenandoah encourages you to exercise that right and on Election Day, we’re celebrating it, too, with music and free Strite’s Donuts at the Brandt Student Center, Leadership Lawn, and free shuttle trips to and from the polls! There’s even a chance to get a picture with a VIP – Buzzy! If you’ve already voted in your home elections in advance, thank you for making your voice heard at the ballot box. All are welcome to this Election Day celebration! For more information, contact Rebecca Gibson at rgibson@su.edu.

Veterans Art Project*
Wednesday, Nov. 8 | 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. | Brandt Student Center, Hornet Grill

Honor veterans in a unique and creative way from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8, by working on a collaborative mural project celebrating their service – no artistic experience is necessary! Art Professor Abigail Gómez, M.F.A., will lead you through the process, which will result in 288 individual paintings that will become one unified image recognizing and supporting those who have selflessly served. For more information, contact Abi Gomez at agomez@su.edu.
