Grant ’21 Lands Lead Role in Broadway’s ‘The Outsiders’

Brody Grant ’21 (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre) was cast in Broadway’s “The Outsiders” as a lead performer in the role of Ponyboy. Grant joins Sky Lakota-Lynch, Brent Comer and Jason Schmidt as part of the initial Broadway casting and in reprising their roles from the musical’s world premiere earlier this year at the La Jolla Playhouse in California (the same theatre where the Tony Award-winning best musicals “Jersey Boys” and “Memphis” launched). Broadway previews begin March 16, 2024, at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

“It’s official,” said Director of Musical Theatre, Coordinator of Recruitment for Musical Theatre, Charles B. Levitin Chair in Musical Theatre and Associate Professor of Theatre Kevin Covert, B.F.A. “I am beyond proud!”

The show is an adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s seminal novel, as well as the Francis Ford Coppola film, which drew from the same source material. The musical features a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine, music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay & Zach Chance) and Justin Levine, music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations by Justin Levine, and choreography by Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman. It is directed by Danya Taymor.

Kiki Lemieux ’21 (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre) also starred in the pre-Broadway tryout of “The Outsiders” from earlier this season. More casting information about the Broadway production will be announced at a later date.
