Shenandoah Conservatory Awarded $7,000 Grant from Mid Atlantic Arts for Collaborative Project with Sweet Honey in the Rock®

Shenandoah Conservatory has received $7,000 in grant support from Mid Atlantic Arts in support of a collaborative university and community project with the Grammy-nominated African American vocal ensemble, Sweet Honey in the Rock®. The grant is part of the Mid Atlantic Folk and Traditional Arts Community Projects program and is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The initiative, “Sweet Honey in the Rock: Educating, Engaging & Empowering Artists & Youth Through Socially Conscious Music,” will feature a series of workshops and masterclasses, culminating in a public performance. The final concert will showcase Sweet Honey in the Rock® with a special appearance by students from Shenandoah University and John Handley High School. Scheduled as part of the conservatory’s Performing Arts Live series, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, in Armstrong Concert Hall.

“We are immensely grateful for the ongoing financial support from Mid Atlantic Arts,” said Executive Director of Performances and Engagement and Artistic Director of Performing Arts Live Courtney Reilly ’18, M.S. “Their grants have been instrumental in advancing our mission to provide meaningful arts engagement for both our students and a diverse range of community members. This year, we are especially honored to collaborate with students from our own Conservatory Choir, as well as university students from the Harambee Gospel Choir and high school students from John Handley High School.”
