On Friday, Sept. 20, Assistant Professor of Vocal Pedagogy Lori Şen, D.M.A., presented her research, “Sephardic Art Song: Western Classical Settings of Sephardic Folksongs,” at the Joint Symposium of the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance (ICTMD) Study Groups on Music and Dance in the Turkic World and the Global History of Music. The symposium, “Echoes of Heritage: Navigating the Legacy of Music and Dance,” was organized by the Azerbaijan National Conservatory with the support of Azerbaijan Ministry of Culture and the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation. It was held from Wednesday, Sept. 18 to Sunday, Sept. 22, in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Şen’s presentation, “Sephardic Art Song: Western Classical Settings of Sephardic Folksongs,” comprised an overview of the history, language, and culture of Sephardim, the development of the Sephardic Art Song genre, and its musical elements and stylistic features. Musical examples were included to introduce the major composers and works of this genre.
